Welcome teachers!
Marc Brown's books are loved by children and motivate them to read at home and in school. Why not use this enthusiasm as a springboard to literacy? Teaching With Favorite Marc Brown Books was written by two well respected educators, Bonnie Brown Walmsley and Sean Walmsley. In their book, teachers will find many ideas for using Marc's books as part of a rich literacy program and ways to develop an author study of Marc Brown in the classroom. The activities can be used with pre-kindergarten through third grade.
For more ideas, check out our PBS Teacher source website and the WGBH Educational Programming and Outreach. Both have great information that help extend current topics featured in the television episodes for use in your classroom.
Another very special way to bring Arthur and his friends to life is to schedule "A Visit From D.W.!" Marc Brown's younger sister Kim, the inspiration for DW, visits schools and libraries all over America. She has a terrific program which helps children see where the stories come from and how the books are made. Your school, library or organization may include a fund-raising book sale with Kim's visit by ordering books directly from the publisher at a substantial discount. To learn more about having DW visit your school or library, check out Kim's feature on our site.
